Build a box

Apple comes first, bright and crisp with a little lemon and ginger, then ripe fig rolls in underneath. As it lathers, cinnamon and a touch of caramel warm it up, and it dries down woodsy, like a walk through wet leaves.

The base is olive oil and tallow, with coconut for bubbles and a little shea butter and castor for a creamy, steady lather. Milk, sugar and silk make it richer still, and mica gives it its color. We make it by cold process and cure it slowly. One fragrance oil, Bramble Berry's Autumn Fig Harvest, carries the scent.

Autumn Fig is the bar for the first cool evening of the year. Light a candle and take your time.

Open the wrapper and peppermint is the first thing you meet, bright and cooling. Tea tree follows, green and medicinal, and lavender settles in underneath to soften the edges. In the shower the mint opens up and the whole bar smells like a jar of dried herbs on an old shop shelf.

We make it in our Heritage process, cooked the homestead way, from olive oil, coconut and shea butter, with avocado oil and a touch of jojoba for a creamy lather. Charcoal turns it black. Three essential oils carry the scent, and nothing else.

Black as an old apothecary's ink and stocked like its shelves. Every village had someone who knew which leaf to reach for; this is their bar.

Bona is Cheryl's mom, and it's what all of Cheryl's kids call her. The name came from her son James, who couldn't quite say grandma when he was little, so he called her Bona, and it stuck. Cheryl made this bar meaning to call it Mountain Cabin, but the first time her granddaughter Astrid smelled it, she said, "This smells like Bona's house!" Everyone who has used it since has said the same thing. So Bona's House it is.

Pine needle leads, green and resinous, with dry, warm cedarwood behind it, like the high desert country of New Mexico where Bona lives. Patchouli gives it an earthy floor, and in the lather it turns bright and fresh.

We make it in our Heritage process, the homestead way, with olive oil, coconut, shea butter and castor. Colloidal oats and bentonite clay make the lather creamy, and each bar is topped with whole juniper berries.

Clary sage opens it, herbal and a little musky, and bergamot adds a bright citrus edge. As the lather builds, cedarwood comes through underneath, warm and woody. Three essential oils, balanced so no one note shouts.

It starts with tallow, the traditional soapmaker's fat, plus coconut and olive oil, shea and cocoa butter, and a touch of castor for a steady lather. Calendula flowers go in by hand. We make it by cold process and let it cure slowly.

Botanical No. 3 smells like a walk through an herb garden that ends at the woodpile. Made for anyone who'd rather smell like the outdoors than a perfume counter.

Black raspberry comes first, dark and jammy, with just enough tartness to keep it lively. As the lather builds, vanilla warms it up and rounds it off sweet. It's dessert you can take into the shower.

The base is plant-based: olive oil, coconut and shea butter, with a little castor for a steady lather. Milk, sugar and silk make the lather creamier, sodium lactate makes a harder bar, and mica gives it its color. We make it by cold process and cure it slowly.

Bramble and Cream is berries picked off the bramble with a pour of cream on top, the way a July afternoon ought to smell.

Pick it up and you get lemon peel: litsea, also called may chang, a fresh rind with a soft floral edge. Work up a lather and tea tree takes over, green and a little medicinal, the smell of crushed leaves. Together they settle into a clean herbal citrus.

The base is olive oil and tallow for a firm, long-wearing bar, with coconut for bubbles and a little shea butter and castor for a creamy lather. Aloe vera juice stands in for the water. Charcoal makes the dark swirl, and kaolin clay, sugar and silk round out the lather. Two essential oils, nothing more.

Citrus, carbon, swirl: the name is the recipe. A plain-working bar with a bit of a twist.

Coconut comes up first, creamy and warm, with patchouli grounding it underneath. Lime cuts through both and keeps it bright. In the lather it smells like a beach bar at dusk: sweet, a little smoky, and fresh.

It's a cold process tallow bar with olive oil, coconut, shea and cocoa butter, plus goat milk, sugar and silk for a dense, creamy lather. Calamine gives the pink, activated charcoal the black, and the top is finished with coarse sea salt. The scent is one fragrance oil and lime essential oil.

Coconut up front and noir underneath: pretty in pink, a little dark, and salty on top. A bar with some attitude.

Patchouli comes up first, dark and earthy. Cedarwood adds a woodland edge, and lavender rounds it off clean and herbal. Three essential oils, nothing else to hide behind.

Underneath is a plant-based bar of olive, coconut, shea butter and castor oil, with a little sugar and silk for the lather and kaolin clay for slip. We make it by cold process and let it cure slowly. The orange, purple and blue swirls are mica, done by hand, so no two bars match.

This is our flagship, made for the posh hippie in all of us. Dirty in name only, and proud of it.

Berry and orange come up first, bright and a little spicy with clove. Ylang ylang and tonka add a soft, sweet middle, and as the lather builds it finishes warm: creamy vanilla, myrrh and resin. It's one fragrance oil from Bramble Berry, and it does a lot of dancing.

Underneath is a plant-based bar of olive oil, coconut and shea butter, with a little castor for a steady lather. Powdered milk, sugar and silk make the lather richer, and sodium lactate gives a harder, longer-lasting bar. The green, pink and purple swirls and the silver top are mica, done by hand. We make it by cold process and give it a slow cure.

Disco Shimmer is for the shower before the party, or the one after. No occasion required.

Eucalyptus leads, clean and sharp, like a steamy shower on a cold morning. Spearmint brings a cool sweetness underneath, and rosemary adds a green, herbal edge that keeps it from going minty-sweet. Three essential oils, and that's the whole scent.

It's a plant-based bar of olive oil, shea butter and coconut, with sweet almond oil and a little castor for a steady lather. Aloe vera juice takes the place of half the water, and kaolin clay and silk add slip. We make it by cold process and give it a slow cure.

Eucalyptus Dream is the bar for mornings that need a little help. Breathe in, and you're awake.

Cheryl first made this bar as gifts for the fathers in her life: her husband, her brother, her father and her sons. Then she fell in love with it herself, so now it's here for yours.

Oud leads, deep and woody with a hint of leather. Birchwood adds a curl of smoke on top. On the dry bar it's warm and quiet. In the lather it opens into something richer, the scent that lingers in a den after the fire has burned down.

There's no tallow in this one: it's mostly olive oil, with coconut for bubbles and castor for a steady foam. Powdered milk and colloidal oats make the lather creamy, and kaolin and bentonite clay give it slip. Two fragrance oils carry the scent.

Pick it up and it's pink grapefruit, bright and juicy without the sour edge. In the lather, berries and guava come forward and round it out into something sweet and sunny. It's a fruit scent that stays cheerful rather than candied.

The base is almost all tallow, with a little castor oil for a dense, steady foam, so the bar is firm and long-wearing. Kaolin clay adds slip, and there's real carrot juice in it too. We make it by cold process, and one fragrance oil, called Energy, carries the scent.

Golden Hour is named for that late-afternoon light when everything turns warm. This is the bar for the end of a long day.

Some days you want a soap that smells like nothing at all. This one has no fragrance and no essential oils, so all you get is the faint, clean smell of the oils themselves and a little earthiness from the turmeric.

It's a plant-based bar, mostly olive oil, with shea and mango butter for a creamy lather and a little castor oil to hold the foam steady. Turmeric powder gives it its golden color. We make it by cold process and let it cure slowly.

We call it Golden Radiance for that color. It was made as a face bar, and it's gentle enough to stay there.

Just lavender, and real lavender essential oil at that. On the dry bar it's clean and a little herbal; in warm water it softens and sweetens, the way a lavender field smells at the end of a hot day. One essential oil, nothing else.

The base is tallow, with coconut for bubbles, olive oil, and two butters, shea and cocoa, for a lather that feels thick and velvety. A little castor oil keeps the foam steady, and purple mica gives it its color. Cold process, slow-cured.

We named it Lavender & Velvet for the scent and the feel. A simple, elegant bar for slowing down.

Cinnamon opens it, warm and spicy, and orange and lemon cut straight through. In the lather, eucalyptus and rosemary come forward, and it settles into a bold, spiced scent that hangs around the bathroom long after you're done.

Underneath is a generous tallow bar, with olive oil and shea butter for a creamy lather, coconut for bubbles and castor to keep the foam dense. Colloidal oats, sugar, silk and two clays, kaolin and Moroccan, round it out. We make it by cold process and cure it slowly. The scent is one blend of essential oils, Majestic Pure's Thief Blend.

The name comes from the old European legend of the thieves who made the blend famous. We just took the scent and ran.

Vanilla and almond come first, sweet and warm, with a soft oatmeal-and-honey note underneath. It smells like breakfast at a good diner: coffee on, oats in the bowl, something sweet on the side.

We brew real coffee and use it for half the water, then add coconut milk, fine coffee grounds and colloidal oats. The base is olive oil with coconut, cocoa butter and castor, plus a little sweet almond oil, sugar, silk and kaolin clay for a creamy lather. The bar pours in two layers: a smooth top, and a bottom packed with grounds and oats.

Morning Wake Up does what it says on the label. Wake up Hippie is its patchouli-loving cousin.

Rose comes up first, soft and familiar, like a garden at the start of summer. Neroli, the scent of orange blossom, brightens it and keeps it from going powdery. Just two notes, kept simple on purpose.

The base is tallow, the traditional soapmaker's fat, with olive oil, coconut, shea and cocoa butter, and a little castor for a steady lather. Goat milk and colloidal oats make it extra gentle, sugar and silk help the bubbles along, sodium lactate gives a harder bar, and rose petals are scattered through by hand. We make it by cold process and give it a slow cure.

Neroli Rose is an old-fashioned bar with a soft heart: orange blossom and roses, side by side. Honest enough for every day, and pretty enough for the guest bath.

OHM smells like a kitchen on a slow morning: warm milk and sweet honey, soft and round, with a little toasted oat underneath. There's nothing sharp in it, only comfort that sticks around.

We made it with olive oil and tallow, coconut and a little castor, with milk in place of half the water. Real honey and kaolin clay go in for a thick, creamy lather, and colloidal oats make it feel soft. A touch of gold mica gives it its glow. Cold process, slow-cured.

Every honey bar we make is for Lizzy Bee. This is a quiet, gentle one, made with her in mind.

Clary sage leads, herbal and almost tea-like, with sweet orange brightening it and ylang ylang adding a warm, floral finish. On the dry bar it's gentle. In the lather the orange wakes up and the whole thing smells like a garden after rain.

We make it the cold process way with olive oil, coconut, shea and cocoa butter, then stir in honey and Moroccan clay, which gives it the rosy brown color and a silky slip. Each bar is topped by hand with dried flower petals, so no two look quite the same.

Petals on top and a honeycomb pattern pressed into the bar. Every bar with honey is made for Lizzy Bee, and this one wears its flowers for her.

Bergamot, orange and grapefruit open it, bright and fresh. As the lather builds, a soft dried-rose note and jasmine come through, and it settles on sandalwood and a soft musk. One fragrance oil from Bramble Berry carries the whole bouquet.

Underneath is tallow, the traditional soapmaker's fat, with coconut, olive oil, shea butter and a little castor. Milk, sugar and silk make the lather creamier, and pink mica and titanium dioxide give it its color. We make it by cold process and cure it slowly.

Each bar carries a real rose quartz stone, by old tradition the stone of love and kindness, set by hand so no two sit quite alike. Pink Moonstone is named for that pale stone rising over a pink bar. When the soap is gone, the stone is yours to keep.

This is vanilla for people who don't want to smell like a cupcake. The cashmere note is soft and a little musky, and it keeps the vanilla close and warm instead of sugary. On the dry bar it's gentle; in the lather it opens into something cozy.

It's a plant-based bar, mostly olive oil, with shea butter, coconut and a little castor oil for a creamy lather. We cook it by our Heritage process. Moroccan red clay adds color, a spoonful each of kaolin and bentonite clay add slip, and a little titanium dioxide brightens it.

We called it Second Skin because it smells the way a soft sweater feels.

On the dry bar, jasmine leads, sweet and heady. Work up a lather and the dark notes take over: resinous oud, earthy vetiver, and sandalwood smoothing the whole thing out. It ends up floral without the powder and woody without the campfire.

Underneath is a tallow bar with coconut and olive oil, plus a little castor oil to keep the foam dense and steady. A spoonful each of milk and French green clay makes the lather creamier and adds slip, and spirulina gives it color. We make it by cold process, so it cures slowly into a firm bar.

Shadow Bloom is jasmine with the lights turned down. It's made for anyone who likes their flowers with an edge.

Remember the sherbet stand on a hot afternoon? This is that, in soap. Pink grapefruit pops first, then berries and guava come in sweet and juicy as it lathers. It's cheerful and fruity without tipping over into candy.

It's a plant-based bar, half olive oil, with shea butter, coconut and a little castor for a steady, bubbly lather. Milk takes the place of half the water, a spoonful of sugar helps the bubbles, and silk and kaolin clay add slip. Mica and titanium dioxide give it its color.

Solar Sherbet is a scoop of summer you can take into the shower, any time of year.

Lavender is the only scent here, clean and calm, and it sits lightly on the dry bar. In the lather it mixes with the milk and honey into something soft and a little sweet, more comfort than perfume.

We make it the cold process way from olive oil, coconut and tallow, with powdered milk, honey and ground oats stirred in for a creamy lather. The top gets a honeycomb pattern and a scatter of oats, so you can see what's inside.

Named for slow Sunday mornings and a warm bowl of oats with milk and honey. Every honey bar we make is for Lizzy Bee, and this one keeps it simple and sweet.

This one barely smells of anything, on purpose. A light touch of lavender essential oil gives a clean, herbal hint on the dry bar that fades to almost nothing in the lather. If you like your soap quiet, start here.

It's mostly tallow, made by our Heritage process: cooked in the pot before it's molded. Castor and sweet almond oil round out the base, jojoba oil goes in after the cook for a smooth feel, and oats, yogurt and kaolin clay give the lather a soft, milky slip.

Tallow and Oats is exactly what it sounds like. Simple, traditional and made to last.

Birchwood comes first, dry and a little smoky, like bark split for the fire. Work up a lather and the oud rolls in underneath, deep and resinous. It's a woodsy scent that smells clean rather than like a campfire.

The recipe is about as simple as soap gets: tallow, with a little castor oil to keep the foam dense. A spoonful each of sugar, silk and coconut milk helps the lather, and a little charcoal adds color. This batch was our very first cold-process soap, and one fragrance oil carries the scent.

Timber and Tallow says it all: wood in the scent, tallow in the bar.

Cedarwood and birchwood come first, dry and a little smoky. Oud brings the depth, and a soft cashmere note warms the whole thing up, like a good leather jacket hung by the fire. It's woodsy and grown-up, and never sweet.

We make it by cold process with real Scout Dog 44 Amber Ale from Veterans United Craft Brewery in Jacksonville, one of our favorites. The base is tallow with coconut and olive oil, and silk makes the lather extra creamy. Earth-toned mica gives it its color.

Valiant Pint is for the fellow who'd rather be at the brewery. Now he can take a little of it home.

Sweet orange hits first, juicy and bright, the morning half of the bar. Patchouli comes in underneath, earthy and familiar, so it never tips into candy. In the lather the two settle into a warm, sunny scent that's easy to wake up to.

It's a plant-based cold process bar of olive oil, coconut, shea butter and castor, with turmeric stirred in for that golden color. It lathers up big and bubbly, and two essential oils, orange and patchouli, do all the work. No colorants beyond the turmeric.

Dirty Hippie's sister bar, made for the hippie who is actually up before noon and already outside with a coffee.

Warm Theory is one idea, done properly: sandalwood. It's soft and creamy on the dry bar, and in the lather it turns warmer and woodier, the kind of scent that's still on the towel later. No vanilla, no sweetness, nothing to dress it up.

We make it by our Heritage process, cooking the soap in the pot before it goes into the mold. The base is tallow and olive oil with shea butter, coconut and castor, and aloe vera juice stands in for the water. Coconut milk, colloidal oats, sugar, silk and a little bentonite clay make the lather creamy, and a pinch of turmeric warms the color. One fragrance oil carries the scent.

The theory is simple: warm wood, good soap, nothing extra.

White tea comes first, light and clean, almost like fresh linen. Lily opens up behind it, soft and floral without getting heavy. In the lather it turns creamy and mild, the kind of scent that stays close instead of filling the room.

This is a cold process bar of olive oil and tallow, with coconut, shea butter and castor for a rich, creamy lather. Wildflower honey, powdered milk, colloidal oats and kaolin clay go in the pot, and the honeycomb top is finished with calendula petals and dried wildflowers.

Named for the fields the bees work all summer. Like every honey bar we make, it's for Lizzy Bee.
