From the workshop

The shop is open: how we got here

Today at noon, the doors of our shop opened. If you have been following along, thank you. If you are new here, welcome. I want to tell you what it took to get to this day, because it took a lot more than soap.

The soap is my part. I make every batch myself here in Palm Coast: weighing the oils, mixing, pouring, cutting each bar by hand, and then waiting. Most bars cure for four to six weeks before they are ready, so every bar in the shop was made more than a month before you ever saw it. I also run the business: ordering supplies, setting prices, packing orders and keeping track of it all.

Everything else you see here is Jon’s. My husband built this website from the ground up. He made the artwork and the graphics, including Lizzy Bee, who you will find tucked in around the site. He designed the labels, photographed the bars and wrote the code behind the shop.

He also built something you will never see: a workshop just for me, behind the scenes. It holds every recipe and works each one out to the gram. It follows every batch from the pot to the curing rack to the shelf, prints the labels, rings up sales at markets and keeps the shop’s stock honest, so when the website says a bar is ready, it is.

Every batch gets its own sheet from the workshop. The counts and weights are written on by hand.

None of it happened quickly. Since the summer, our evenings and weekends have gone into this. Recipes were tested and tested again. Labels were printed, reprinted and printed again. Photos were retaken until the bars looked like themselves. Every page of this site was written, rewritten and checked. There were more late nights at the kitchen counter and at the keyboard than either of us wants to count.

Every bar carries Cheryl's signature stamp: Lady Byrd.

We did it this way, slowly and by hand, for the same reason I make soap the way I do. Lady B’s began as my way through grief after we lost our daughter, Lizzy, and it has grown into something our whole family pours itself into. Every bar is made for her. This shop is too.

So come in and look around. Pick a favorite, or let us fill a box for you. And thank you for being here at the very start.
